BACKYARD BIRDS

There are so many bird blogs out there that I'm loathe to join in because I am hopeless at photographing and identifying birds. This is something that I must work on. Anyway here are a few birds that visit our garden.

I think this is a Pied Currawong. They have a lovely song but not a very nice nature. They eat other baby birds and eggs. Here he is eyeing off my tomatoes, which have to be in a fenced garden to keep  the wallabies out of the veggie patch.

This is the pretty Blue Faced Honeyeater. It has olive coloured wings.

The Pale Headed Rosella.  This was taken some months ago when we last had rain.

The noisy Rainbow Lorikeet love the Bottle Brush Tree outside our bedroom. So we have early morning screeching when the tree is in bloom.

The Lorikeets also love the Grevillea Tree and...

 the Banksia Tree.

  1. I think you've got some great shots here. You should be sharing them. I especially loved your Rainbow Lorikeet shots. They are cheeky little things, and always seem to love posing for the camera. Your I.D.s seem to be spot on.

  2. Those rainbow lorikeets are so handsome but they cause havoc to my fruit trees. Lovely images Diane.

  3. Aside from the lorikeets, which seem the same all over Australia, the other birds are quite unfamiliar to us down south.

  5. Diane, your photos are wonderful. And I love your yardbirds. The Rosella and the Lorikeet are my favorite. The Honeyeater is another beauty! You should be sharing your bird photos for all to see. Have a great week ahead.

  7. You have a really great series of backyard birds here Diane, they can be so noisy but I would miss them so much if they weren't there wouldn't you.

  8. it's fun to add birds to your photography opportunities don't you think Diane? Glad you shared these. The odd one out for me is the pale-headed rosella, not seen around here at all and equally as beautiful as the Eastern too.

  9. Lovely photos of your birds. I didn't know the name of your Pied Currowong.I have a couple of birds that we saw on our camping tour that I can't find in either of my two bird books. Is there a book that you would recommend?

  10. Your pied currowong looks like our magpie but no doubt completely different species. You have quite a selection in your garden, with my favourite being the rainbow lorikeet.

  12. Wow! Beautiful birds and native flowers! I don't think you are hopeless at all.

  13. Your currawong looks like the ugly cousin of our magpies. I'd probably poop my pants to see a lorikeet or a rosella in the wild! Those are parrots I almost had as pets back in the days when I had more parrots (instead of dogs).

  15. What a great collection of bird photos Diane. I am not an expert either but we have so many knowledgeable bloggers who are and are only too willing to help. I've learned a lot from them. Have a great week :)

  16. Wow ! what colorful birds ! Around our house we only have grey sparrows, maybe because of the cats !

  17. You have captured some very colorful birds in your backyard. The photos are wonderful, so I won't worry about the identification -- I'll just enjoy.

  19. Wonderful backyard and great birds in it! I do Stewart's WBW blog. People are very nice and have helped me in identifying a bird several times. This is what I've found when we go birding in real life as well ...experts are always glad to share. Of course you could call your beautiful and amazing birds anything and I'd assume you were right...we don't have any of them over here (I'm envious!).

  20. The Lorikeet is my favorite, at least as far as appearance goes. Such gorgeous vivid colors! But screeching, not so great. Your birds are much more interesting than what I see in my garden!

  21. You have so many beautiful birds down there, Diane... I love seeing birds from other countries. The Lorikeets are so colorful. Thanks for sharing...

I pray for your country and those horrible fires. I hope you get some rain soon. Scary--I'm sure.

We are having FREEZING RAIN tonight here. Not fun... Thank Goodness we don't have to get out.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

I too love seeing your lorikeets

  23. LOVE the rainbow lorikeets. At the end of each day they fly to settle back 'home' in some trees in the park next to my parents' house. Hours of happy screeching goes on, presumably as they catch up with each others' news.

  25. So glad you decided to share them Diane - I'd never seen the pale headed Rosella before... so striking in detail. Great capture.

  27. It's amazing what can be found in the backyard if you look. The pied currawong is like our pied crow. Although ours chase all other birds, I'm not sure if they eat their young and eggs. Our Yellowbilled Kites do, and are also a nuisance. I just love your colorful birds right there on your beautiful shrubs.
